Yorick was the deceased court jester whose skull is exhumed by the gravedigger in Act 5, Scene 1, of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The sight of Yorick's skull evokes a monologue from Prince Hamlet on the vile effects of death:

"Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio; a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy; he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung those lips that I have kissed I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now?" (Hamlet, V.i)

I've done arguably better sculptures, but this is by far my favorite, even with all the flaws I see in it now. Hamlet is among my favorite tragedies of Shakespeare, and this was born from a dream I had shortly after reading it the first time. A jester dies, and his personal hell is to play Fool to the devil forevermore .. something like that.

I wish I'd spent more time on the finer details. Yorick's very heavy - there's a bit of a hollow underneath his lower jaw, but that's it. The cranium and those big horns in the back are completely solid. It's a miracle this guy came out of the kiln intact. His teeth look a bit too rounded, and a little too .. eh .. un-receded? [link] They should actually look like they're implanted into the jaw, not just stuck onto the front of it.
I like how the joint lines in the cranium turned out, and the white gunk I rubbed on the skull (but not teeth and horns) really helped to make it look old and grainy in the right places. I really wish I'd carved out the excess clay from the jaws, rather than just make a big indentation, but oh well.

Many thanks given to this awesome lady right here :iconarrsistable: for helping me learn the dauntingly numerous handy things in Photoshop 7. WE NEED TO HOOK UP YOU ROCKIN' WOMAN YOU. Rrrrrr. <3
Reddish-yellow heavy-grain clay and .. I want to say white underglaze for what went onto the bone parts of this, but it was much thicker and heavier, and I don't remember what it was called. ¯\(º_o)/¯

This is fantastic! I especially love the grooves and cracks around the horns and on the top of the skull. :)
